CODE-SWITCHING IN ENGLISH AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE
CLASSROOMS: ITS IMPLICATION TO THE STUDENTS’
SPEAKING ACHIEVEMENT IN ENGLISH
(SOCIO-PRAGMATIC APPROACH)


ABSTRACT

Code-switching in English as foreign language classrooms: its implication to the students’ speaking achievement in English (socio-pragmatic approach) (A Case Study at sixth semester on English department of STKIP PGRI Bangkalan in the academic year of 2015/2016).             The aims of the research are: (1) to investigate the lecturer’s code-switching (2) to find out the students’ code-switching, and (3) to describe the implication of code-switching to the students’ speaking acquisition within the EFL classrooms. The subjects were the students of the class b and the lecturer at sixth semester on English department. This research was a case study. The data were collected trough observation, interview, and questionnaire. The findings showed that the lecturer and the students applied CS in the form of inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag-switching. The factors related to the students' comprehension, change of topic, policy of institution, the lecturer and personal factor. They used word, phrase and sentence form in alternating the language or conducting CS during the class. The researcher also found that alternating the language in EFL classroom had implication to the students’ achievement in speaking. Finally, it can be concluded that the lecturer and the students’ applied CS to make the teaching learning process understandable and enjoyable. And they usually changed their language from English to Bahasa.
